“Why is he in a job?” – Celtic inquest continues as key recruitment figure comes under the spotlight

Sack the board! Only kidding. In fact, I am not because if Celtic lose the league this season then that is exactly the chants Peter Lawwell and the rest of the Parkhead suits are bound to hear.

The Celtic fans are already calling for action against the boardroom (and I’ll get to that later) but what has really come to the fore is how the club actually go about their recruitment business.

Do they load up the latest version of Football Manager and do a quick search with ‘pace’ and ‘dribbling’ set at 20 and hit ‘search’ or is there an actual thought process that goes into it?

And that was exactly the topic of conversation on A Celtic State of Mind. Paul John Dykes was questioning the club’s recruitment and is looking for answers on how exactly are the guys in charge of identifying and buying players qualified to do so?

Dykes said (A Celtic State of Mind), “It’s gone wrong since that first season under Ange in terms of recruitment. People are now digging a bit deeper which tends to happen when things aren’t going right.

“We’re now told that the head of scouting is brilliant at selling Pringle sweaters in golf shops.s Why is he in a job?

“If he was brilliant at scouting, I don’t care if he’s the manager’s laddie, Gordon Starchan’s, Dermot Desmond’s or Peter Lawwell’s, it doesn’t bother me.

“You’re not telling me he’s the best at that particular job. And I think that the recruitment has shown in the last four windows, Mark Lawwell’s definitely not the best at that job either.”

I don’t think any of them are fit for purpose and now it seems that Celtic fluked the first two transfer windows under Ange because since we signed Alistair Johnston we have not identified a single player fit to wear the jersey.

Will we get answers to why the recruitment is so shambolic? I doubt it but we can certainly make our voices heard at the next home game at Celtic Park.
