“Based on several sources” – Phil Mac shares how Celtic’s hunt for Ange Postecoglou successor should worry the fans

Celtic Park

We all remember when Ange Postecoglou resigned from Celtic and how loads of managers and coaches across Europe were linked with the job, right?

The Celtic board seemed to be doing their due diligence and speaking to some of the best candidates around the world of football.

The Australian was an icon at Celtic not only for his style of football but he also seemed to drag the board out of their comfort zone and invest properly in the transfer market.

And don’t get me started on the way he dealt with the press. The guy was a class act.

However, it seems that the search for a new boss was not as extensive as the Scottish press would have us believe. If fact, it seems like there was only ever one man in the running according to Phil Mac Ghiolla Bhain.

In his latest blog, Phil said, “It is my settled view, based on several sources, that Dermot Desmond was motivated to rectify a personal slight at Hampden in 2016.

“That ushered in Brendan’s first spell in charge.

“When the Irish billionaire finally discovered that Ange Postecoglou was going to England, there was only one candidate in mind nad he duly landed him.

“Anything else to the contrary was just noise.”

It all reeks of another Neil Lennon in the Parkhead showers moment. The Celtic board got lucky with Ange.

When Eddie Howe knocked us back Postecoglou was there to pick up the pieces and what a job he did.

It seems that with Rodgers, we have not been so lucky. After a successful first stint as Hoops boss, Rodgers returned to bring back European glory days. He failed miserably.

And so did, it seems, the Celtic board. By seemingly not looking for the BEST candidate and just focusing on what was available, have the Parkhead suits made another huge error of judgment? It certainly seems like it.

  1. I said it many times Ange was different from any manager in the last 20 years as he had 18 months Lawell free. No monkey on his shoulder. This aided him greatly in my opinion. It’s blatantly obvious where the problem lies and its not the manager. Cant turn a pigs ear into a silk purse.
    Current squad proves it.
