Celtic fans scratching their heads at Jermaine Defoe for bizarre ‘comical’ Glasgow Derby interview

Former Rangers striker, Jermaine Defoe talking about Celtic

Look, I get it. A big Glasgow Derby comes up and Celtic and Rangers roll out the ex-players to say something positive about their team’s chances of pulling off a result.

Normally the Celtic corner is generally quite cautious and give nothing away. Play down the fixture, hope for the best etc….

But with the Rangers camp, they seem to exude this bizarre air of confidence and wheel out the usual trope to get the Ibrox hordes whipped up into a frenzy and give the Celtic fans every and all excuse to rip it out of them.

And this interview from former Rangers striker, Jermaine Defoe, is no different.

Defoe’s bizarre interview ahead of Celtic vs Rangers

The Steven Gerrard signing in 2018, Defoe played just five Glasgow Derbies winning two and scoring just once. COVID season was the season the two victories came. (Transfermarkt)

But, overall, his experience of the fixture is limited to say the least. Which makes this interview just bizarre:

My initial reaction was on of just sheer confusion:

What exactly is he talking about? Defoe says Philippe Clement gets it and he’s a brilliant manager. Gets what exactly? What does that even mean?

As for his managerial acumen, Defoe has never even met the guy. How does he know what his coaching is like?

Plus, what depth of analysis did he offer to come to the conclusion that James Tavernier and Connor Goldson will help contribute to the win?

Goldson is out for the rest of the season and Tavernier has caused countless goals for his side whilst being on the losing side 21 times out of the 35 games he has played in. (Transfermarkt)

It was thee most bizarre interview full of the the worst cliches in football and these Celtic fans called it out:

One fan believes even Defoe doesn’t believe what he was saying:

And this fan sums up Tavernier and Goldson quite nicely:

Such a bizarre two minutes and exactly the reason why we continue to laugh at that club at every opportunity we can.
