Treble Legend Touted For Major Parkhead Role
The Director of Football role at Celtic, or the lack of one, has been a source of mystery over the course of the summer.
With the much hyped “move” for Fergal Harkin and the rumour of Gordon Strachan shot down by new CEO, Dom McKay, talk of who the new man may be has all but gone quiet.
There is one man who would be perfect for the role, according to former EPL striker Kevin Phillips, and that’s former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill.
Speaking to the Football Insider, Phillips says appointing O’Neill would be massive for the club, “He’s probably accepted his managerial career is over,”
“A director of football role makes sense but there has to parameters set up.
“He can’t get too involved with the manager. The new boss needs help.
“He doesn’t know the league, he doesn’t know the market or the sort of players Celtic need to challenge Rangers.
“There’s no one better than Martin O’Neill when it comes to that.
“It could be a really good, massive signing for Celtic in terms of helping them recruit players.“
There is absolutely no doubt the Northern Irishman would be a popular choice amongst the fans and his knowledge of the British game will be vital when it comes to securing talent in the current Brexit climate we are in.
But as Dom McKay seems to be keeping his cards close to his chest regarding the appointment, we can only guess at who, if anyone, will be taking up the role.
