What Dermot Desmond is doing about Brendan Rodgers’ SFA Celtic charge

Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers.

The Tynecastle VAR still rumbles on after the SFA charges Brendan Rodgers for his comments about John Beaton directly after Celtic lost the match.

The 2-0 defeat was largely influenced by the match officials, John Beaton on VAR and referee Don Robertson, to send off Hyunjun Yang and award a ridiculous penalty against Tomoki Iwata.

These decisions caused Rodgers to rage at the officials and brand them incompetent which led to the SFA to step in and charge the Celtic manager.

With a hearing set on the 28th of March, we now have less than two weeks to wait to see how the national association make the charge stick and how Celtic plan to defend their manager.

And it seems that Celtic have the big guns rolling on this one. More specifically, majority shareholder, Dermot Desmond.

Phil Mac Giolla Bhain has told in his latest blog how a source at Celtic has informed him that Desmond is ‘fully engaged’ in Rodgers’ battle with the SFA.

Moreover, the respected Irish blogger has also said that whilst Celtic are prepared to remain silent on the SFA matter in public, they are pursuing a copy of the ‘unredacted’ audio from the Tynecastle game.

Additionally, Celtic will also be looking for the match officials, Don Robertson and John Beaton ‘held to account’ if any wrongdoing is found.

It’s unusual for Desmond to get involved in such matters and the fact he now seems fully invested in this hearing will make the 28th a date the Celtic fans must mark in their diaries.

The Irish billionaire is normally silent in the background at Celtic so it will be interesting to see how much him being involved in this hearing will affect the outcome of the charge.

With Rodgers possibly looking at an Ibrox dugout ban if found guilty, it’s little wonder Desmond now seems to be stepping into the SFA dispute.

With a £60m Champions League bounty awaiting the winners of the league, those VAR decisions could be the most expensive ones in the history of the game.
