Barry Ferguson’s ‘advice’ on McGregor’s replacement is best ignored

There are certain people in the media that, if they are honest with themselves, shouldn’t be asked for their opinion on Celtic.

People like Kris Boyd, Kenny Miller and Alex Rae all spring to mind.

These guys simply cannot be impartial or at least try to hide their allegiances when offering their weekly slabberfest about the champions or their players.

Not quite as bad (but getting there after this offering) is Barry Ferguson.

Ferguson tries hard to be impartial and, to be fair to him, he is the lesser of the last three evils but after this comment, I’ll need to revise my judgement.

Because his latest opinion on who should replace Callum McGregor leaves him open to ridicule.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson said, “Callum is going to be out now until Christmas so now it’s up to these three (Abildgaard, McCarthy and Mooy) to come in and whoever he (Postecoglou) picks need to show they are capable to take over from Callum in the next couple of months.

“Out of the three I’ve got to be honest with you, McCarthy the last couple of games has shown he’s still there to fight and to try get into the Celtic team.

“I thought he was really good when he came on against Leipzig and again St Johnstone. I think he will be disappointed last week against Leipzig when Abildgaard (came on).

“He showed a bit and again at St Johnstone at the weekend so it will be interesting who he (Postecoglou) goes for.”

Let me get this straight from the off, this is not me having a go at McCarthy as a player. This is me having a go at Ferguson for his basic lack of critical thinking.

Since signing for Celtic, McCarthy has mustered 769 minutes of first team action. Sounds good right? But broken down into 25 appearances over the last 18 months, that’s just over 30 minutes per game.

This season, he has amassed 30 full minutes of football in three appearances.

In whose world would anyone think that McCarthy will step into that role? Especially tonight?

O’Riley will be the man to fill that void for now, but I seriously can’t see McCarthy being given the now or anytime in the foreseeable future.
