Why did The Sun ‘misquote’ Ange on the Old F*rm claim?

Celtic Park, Main Stand entrance

I have never heard the gaffer speak about the Glasgow Derby as the Old F*rm ever.

EVER.

So when I read this article by The Sun, it certainly raised my eyebrows. So I had to read it.

The headline read “‘I can’t go shopping in Glasgow, you can’t escape the Old Firm’ says Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou“.

Ok, I believe the the first 6 words and this outlet really should have stopped there because what Ange said couldn’t be further from the truth. To quote the article on what the Celtic boss ACTUALLY said in an interview with Aussie broadcaster Sportsday, “It’s just that sort of city where there’s kind of only two clubs that are of any interest and you can’t escape it, particularly if you become manager of one of the two clubs.

“It meant adjusting in terms of lifestyle for the family.

“We try to keep it as normal as possible but the first few times we ventured out to a shopping centre we figured out that can’t happen anymore, particularly for the family.

“Everyone was really welcoming and I guess success helps that but it was an adjustment in terms of the instant recognition people have of me as opposed to when I was back home.

“At the same time, I love it. People are just passionate about sport, they are passionate about their football club, that’s the stuff I love so I’m happy to fit in with that.”

Not a single mention of the Old F*rm tag. Not one.

Because Ange knows the score. He has his finger on the pulse the depth of feeling the supporters have on this tag.

He knows not only because he is a supporter of the club, but all the furore surrounding the Sydney Cup will also have alerted the gaffer the the fans feeling on that ‘brand’.

You could say the Sun printed a lie to get fans to click on it. I’m not going to say that.

All I’m going to say is that they have been very ‘clever’ with their headline to get Celtic fans to engage with it.

  1. The bait worked, you clicked and read even though you knew it would be a mistake. If I see an article linked to ANY mainstream press or tv I don’t even bother reading the headline/subject, if there’s anything worthwhile the relevant info will filter through tic sites and tweets. Resist the urge to click, deny these anti-Celtic scumbags as much revenue as possible and hasten the death of old media and it’s sevconian sycophancy.
