‘Celtic didn’t need’ – Tom English’s surprising Rangers comments after Dundee draw

Tom English talks Celtic

The knives have been out for Philippe Clement after he allowed Rangers to surrender their lead to Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

These threads on Follow Follow are a testament to the feeling amongst the Rangers fans about their team and their gaffer.

And whilst the scattergun is out amongst the Ibrox support, there has been criticism from other quarters. With one surprising one being Tom English

Tom English says Rangers were ‘blah’

Now the reason why the BBC journalist’s comments are surprising is because he has actually criticised the Ibrox club.

No really, he has. Quick as a flash to condemn Celtic and their fans, English’ silence and refusal to say anything negative about Rangers on social media is palpable.

Which is why these comments about Rangers’ draw with Dundee are so surprising:

English said on X, “Comfortable point for Dundee and a totally deserved boost to their push for Europe. For Rangers, a washout, so to speak.

“Celtic didn’t need gifts from their rivals in order to win the league, but they’re getting them anyway.

“Rangers needed to be intense but were just so…blah.”

It’s not much of a criticism but at least it’s a start of trying to appear balanced. As I said before, English generally takes any opportunity he can to criticise Celtic so this one must have really hurt him to do.

And whilst his comments are refreshing, I wonder if he’ll make any comment on the Rangers fans’ sectarian singing at some point.

I’m sure the article is sitting in his drafts somewhere…
