The astonishing referee stat on how easy it is for Celtic’s opposition to win a penalty compared to Rangers

Match Day Celtic Park

Alan Morrison’s report on A Celtic State of Mind about refereeing patterns of assistance for Rangers went viral just before Easter weekend.

Morrison is an expert analyst on the game and has an extensive knowledge of players, stats and everything you could ever want to know about Celtic and our players.

But as VAR continues to cause controversy, Morrison looked into the pattern of assistance Rangers have enjoyed since Crawford Allan became the SFA Head of Referees.

And whilst the Scottish media fail to touch this huge story, Morrison delivered his evidence on A Celtic State of Mind and it has caused ructions on social media.

This next stat is mindblowing and it delves into how easily Celtic’s opponents get awarded a penalty compared to Rangers and the result will leave you astonished.

Getting a penalty against Rangers is almost impossible

Morrison said (A Celtic State of Mind), “And very helpfully I found an article in the European Journal of Sport Science, which is quite a nice publication actually.

“The entries into the box is a pretty good proxy for things like you know, how many penalties you should be getting.

“Think about it logically. The only way you get a penalty is when you get the ball in the box. So this is the first picture that shows you the number of times an opponent in the SPFL has to get into your box on average before they get awarded a penalty.

“The average in the SPFL is 147. Celtic, they’re right in the middle, they get a penalty on average, about 142 times so slightly below the average. That doesn’t surprise me.

“But the absolute outlier, statistically again is hugely and highly statistically significant is that you need to get into the Rangers box 372 times on average before you get awarded a penalty.”

It should be noted that Morrison used independent advisors and as he states above, external sources so that his findings can be as impartial as possible.

I would urge every Scottish football fan to watch the full episode above as the incredible amount of work Alan has put in and the results he has found are quite incredible.
