Celtic academy graduate told he needs to ‘move on’ this summer to save his career

Celtic Park

Celtic have plenty of work to do in the coming transfer window to improve the squad enough to make an impact in Europe.

Brendan Rodgers bemoaned the lack of quality at the club after being eliminated from the Champions League this year so spending money has got to be high on his list this summer.

However, there is one player who has been told that, despite being highly rated, he must leave Celtic in order to save his career.

Stephen Welsh must leave Celtic

Stephen Welsh is a product of the Celtic Acadamy and has only made 64 appearances for Celtic since his debut back in 2018. [Transfermarkt]

The Scottish defender has never been capped at international level but does have 32 caps at youth level for Scotland.

His position at Celtic has been highlighted as a weakness Brendan Rodgers needs to address but A Celtic State of Mind‘s Jerry Taylor gives his reasons why the 24-year-old he needs to leave Paradise this summer.

Taylor said (A Celtic State of Mind), “I think Welsh, we said a lot in preseason that he’s a good central defender.

“I like him at Celtic I think he’s got to go off and sign for a club permanently, be a full time player and learn his craft getting the games.

“I don’t think he’s going to be a number one choice at the centre of defence ever at Celtic unless there’s injuries.

“So I guess it’s time for Stephen Welsh to move on next season. I’m not saying I wouldn’t want him here. If I found out he was staying and he was going to be our backup then great.

“I think to further his career he needs to go off and start something new.”

If you have been at the club for as long as Welsh has and have yet to make a mark at first team level, the time is probably right to go.

Granted, injury has blighted him over the past few seasons but when you look at who is ahead of him right now, it’s difficult to see exactly how he can force his way into Rodgers’ plans.
