Serious doubts cast on Ange Postecoglou signing’s future after Celtic’s match-day squad mystery

Doubts have been cast on the future of Celtic striker, Hyeongyu Oh, after being dropped like a stone from Brendan Rodgers’ matchday squad.

The South Korean was second in line behind Kyogo Furuhashi for a starting spot but the form of Republic of Ireland international, Adam Idah, has meant that even Kyogo now finds himself struggling for a starting berth.

Ironically, Oh was taken to the Asia Cup on international duty at a time when Kyogo was struggling for form and had he not been taken by Jurgen Klinsmann, undoubtedly Oh would have gotten his chance.

But as it was, Celtic had to sign a backup striker and Idah was that man.

McCluskey said (A Celtic State of Mind), “He’s (Brendan Rodgers) pretty much played anyone else that he can at times to avoid playing Oh by the looks of it. I don’t think he rates him.

“I don’t think he fancies him as as a player. It’s a bit of a shame because I do I like him.

“I think he’s got ability. I think he’s got raw ability, but he’s one of those players that needs to have a run of games to show what he’s got.

“But the moment we’ll just never know because he never gets the chance. And now with Idah coming in that’s him further down the pecking order.

“So I wouldn’t be surprised if he was one of many players to leave in the summer because I think there will be a big reorganisation of the squad and he hasn’t played enough minutes to suggest that he’ll hang around for next season.”

Hyeongyu Oh Celtic stats 2023/24

Despite having made 26 appearances this season, Oh has only found the back of the net five times. Now, that might sound disappointing, however when you take into account that he has only had 722 minutes on the pitch that equates to an average of 27 minutes each appearance.

Hardly enough to make any sort of impact at Celtic.

Oh’s last appearance in the league was in the 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock last month and since then he was an unused substitute in the draw with Motherwell and didn’t make the matchday squad for the Dundee win and Hearts defeat. (Transfermarkt)

The future for Oh under Rodgers doesn’t look good and it will be even worse if the the Celtic manager does decide to make Adam Idah’s loan move permanent in the summer.

  1. Would agree that the time of OH in a Celtic Jersey is rapidly coming to a end, certainly with Rodgers calling the shots?
Wouldn’t be overly confident of kyogo staying either imo?
Rodgers seems to like the smaller CF to be able to drop into that no10 role also, and that doesn’t seem to suit kyogo whatsoever imo?
Rodgers has already overloaded plenty that were in Ange squad from last season?
Don’t believe Rodgers is finished yet in dismantling that squad from last season, especially if he remains as manager for next season imo?
