“Aren’t doing it in training” – Former Celtic star shares why Brendan Rodgers won’t play two summer signings

Celtic’s transfer business continues to be hung out like a dirty washing for everyone to see.

The failure to add genuine quality in the summer window has never been more apparent when two players who cost almost £8m cannot get in ahead of Nat Phillips.

The Liverpool defender was brought in on loan as Brendan Rodgers negotiated a difficult injury spell. But now that all players are back fit, Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki are still nowhere to be seen.

Maybe they will get their chance when Phillips is sent back to Liverpool in January like a cheap Christmas jumper but it seems they will need to step it up in training because former Celtic hero, Frank McAvennie thinks that’s why they are not playing under Rodgers.

McAvennie said, “Rodgers will bring players in in January.

“I’m absolutely convinced of it. Big players too, I think he will bring in quality talent even if it’s just two or three.

“I definitely think we need a centre-back, a left-back, a goalkeeper, a holding midfielder – that’s the four positions that I would like to see brought in.

“The defenders Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki just aren’t doing it in training so they’re not even going to get a game.

“I like Liam Scales but I would like to see him play at left-back and then bring a new centre-half in.” (Football Insider)

Whatever Rodgers needs to do to get his defence performing properly he had better do it quickly.

If Lagerbielke and Nawrocki are not the answer then he needs to address that because after all, they are his players.

  1. I admire much of your output but I think you’ve let yourself down, here. I very much doubt if McAvennie has any more inside knowledge of goings on at the club than I have (and I know nothing).
One other thing…nothing for months and then several emails each day. We’re you in the big hoose? 🙂

    1. Haha. Thanks for the comment. You know me, I like to cover all things Celtic, even if it is McAvennie. Had some personal stuff to deal with over the last few months but all good now thanks mate!
