Gordon Duncan explains why VAR couldn’t have chalked off Maeda’s Motherwell winner even if it wanted to

Match Day Celtic Park

VAR is just the bain of Scottish football right now.

After Celtic fell foul to yer another bizarre penalty decision against Ross County at Parkhead yesterday afternoon, there is still some controversy surrounding Celtic’s previous game against Motherwell.

This fixture was littered with poor decisions against us but there seems to be some weird school of thought that Maeda’s winner should have been chalked off for an infringement by Haksabanovic at a Motherwell throw in.

The details of that has been well documented but what hasn’t is the reason it wouldn’t have been chalked off even if VAR had interjected.

Gordon Duncan cleared up any confusion on Clyde 1Superscoreboard, “I am not 100% sure so if someone can correct me. Again, I’m always keen to be specific here.

I don’t know if VAR rules out the Celtic goal because of that [the ball hitting Haksabanovic].

The reason being, I think my understanding would be the attacking phase of play for Celtic would begin when David Turnbull collects that ball and that’s the point that VR would go back to.”

So it looks like VAR would have went in outlr favour for once had it been implemented on this occasion.

The international break is now upon us and, hopefully, the SFA will take this opportunity to now iron out these VAR ‘honest mistakes’ before the season resumes.
