THE CELTIC BOARDS POTENTIAL £30m FATAL MISTAKE LAID BARE BY SKY SPORTS JOURNALIST

There are just some people in the journalistic world you listen to when they start speaking. You know the kind of person I’m talking about. Ones with integrity and honesty. That try to get the real news to the fans.

One such journalist is Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports News. Joseph reports on all things Scottish football and he also takes the time out to speak to fan run football podcasts.

There are not many journalists that take the time out of their day to engage with local podcasters but Joseph does, and he can only be commended on that.

This time, Joseph appeared on the Only As Good as Your Last Game podcast and he outlined the fatal mistake the Celtic board made in their hunt for a new manager.

Celtic have recently brought Ange Postecoglou in as their new man, to much disdain from the fans, but Joseph says it could all have so much different if the board had followed one, simple rule, “If Celtic, in February, said they were going for a manager outside the box, someone who they think can really push the club on and someone they can get in for decent value like Postecoglou, more people would have gone on board with it.

“If that had happened in February, if Celtic were in talks with Postecoglou in February and March,  more people, I’m not saying everyone would have got on board with that.  I would still say probably the majority wouldn’t have because they hadn’t heard of him, but more people would have would have got on board with that.

“Season tickets would have been able to sell a lot easier. Eddie Howe would have sold season tickets because he was the guy Celtic fans wanted from October/November. He was the guy being talked about.

“Because of what’s happened. Because of the season that’s happened. Because it’s over 100 days since Lennon departed and because they allowed Eddie Howe to basically lead them on for about three months.

There was a real, real disconnect and discontent with the club at the moment over how this has been handled. And Celtic fans see their only real power as not buying season tickets.

Honesty. That’s all it would have took. Honesty and openness. Except all we have now is suspicion and distrust. And in turn what has that done? Caused a toxic environment in which the new Celtic manager needs to work in and if that affects the manager and results on the park, Dom McKay’s honeymoon period will not be over. It will be non existent.

SKY REPORTER GIVES COMPELLING BACKROOM TEAM UPDATE

You know, it really is a strange one. Not the appointment of Ange Postecoglou, but the whole issues with Celtic and allowing their managers to appoint there own backroom team.

Not since the days of Brendan Rodgers, have we seen a manager allowed any form of control of the staff they want to bring in. I think we even need to go as far back as Martin O’Neill‘s days to remember a Celtic manager having TOTAL control of all first team affairs.

With all the talk of Eddie Howe knocking back the Celtic job because he couldn’t get his own team in, you would think that Postecoglou would have already sounded out his guys and work would be ongoing to get them to the club ASAP.

Not according to Sky Reporter Anthony Joseph. Joseph is Sky’s correspondent for Scottish football and he gave an really interesting update on the backroom team scenario. Speaking on the Only As Good As Your Last Game podcast, Joseph revealed, “It depends what kind of role they’ll be in. Certainly, Kennedy and Strachan haven’t been told anything yet, and neither have the other guys that Ange is wanting in.

“But that the pro licence thing doesn’t affect anything. Celtic are very confident Ange will get this certificate of recognition which gives him three years to essentially enrol on the pro licence and complete the pro licence which which should happen.”

So the argument that we could be left in a situation where Ange doesn’t get the backroom team he wants because of the Pro Licence really shouldn’t matter. So why are the club holding onto Kennedy and Strachan? Are they going to be forced upon Postecoglou or is he going to be allowed to get his own team in?

Time will tell, but lets hope whatever situation happens, it doesn’t affect the managers ability to get on with his job.

WHAT SUTTON SAID TODAY CONFUSED THE WHOLE OF CELTIC TWITTER

Right off the bat, Chris Sutton waded into the Ange Postecoglou debate but went about it in a way only Englishmen would understand, and Scotsmen would scratch their heads at.

Cricket isn’t the best analogy to use when you are speaking to a largely Scottish audience but that’s exactly what Sutton did, and the Celtic fans were confused beyond belief.

Sutton said of the appointment,

“For the Celtic cricket fans from an older generation…

Flag of Australia

Ange Postecoglou taking the Celtic job in the current situation is like being sent out to bat against Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee without pads, helmet, gloves and a box…”

And it was enough to send the majority of Celtic twitter into a meltdown. Of confusion. Some levied the accusation that Sutton was having a go at Postecoglou. Some thought it was at the current squad. Many got the gist of what Sutton was trying to say and to be fair, it did take me a while to work it out.

Sutton was simply pointing out that Postecoglou was walking into a job with no protection and suggested that he needed help if he was going to be successful with the massive job he has ahead of him.

No doubt Postecoglou has a massive job ahead of him and no doubt he knows what he is walking into, but is there doubt in his ability to lead Celtic through this difficult phase in their history? Time will tell.

GOT TO LOVE STRACHAN’S TAKE DOWNS. HERE ARE HIS BEST AT CELTIC

I read an article where Gordon Strachan absolutely destroyed the pundit’s and their coverage of the incoming Celtic boss, Ange Postecoglou, and thought ‘I wish we had a manager like that’. Someone to stick the boot into the media hacks whenever they attacked our club.

And it really brought back memories of how Strachan used to handle the press as Celtic manager. With thanks to TalkCeltic.net, here are some of Strachan’s belting replies that should hopefully put a smile on your face through these dark times:

“We even competed for the acne cream when we were younger. Obviously, I won that one.”
Strachan on Rangers manager and former Aberdeen team-mate Alex McLeish.

“So it’s not easy. If I put Riordan in instead of Nakamura, you’re off your head; take Aiden out, you’re off your head; leave Maciej out, you’re off your head. So basically, I’m off my head.”
WGS on Riordan situation as fans/media asking why he is not playing ahead of some of the numpties we have in attack, April 2007

Interviewer: “Gordon tell us how your feeling winning back to back title here today”
WGS: “Sorry I cannae describe my position to anybody…. I’d love tae but…. I’ve never taken drugs but I wonder if it’s a bit like this!”
On winning the Scottish Premier League and winning game in 92nd minute of game v Killie (Apr 2007)

Asked if changing the shape of the team was the one way in which he could surprise Spartak, he offered a characteristically sharp response:
“Well, not if you and I keep talking about it.”
WGS on tactics before the Champions League qualifiers (Aug 07)

“Fans can be easily manipulated by you,(press) You can start wars you people , never mind going for managers “In reference to the press (Aug 07)

And this one, every Celtic fan can relate to and love WGS for it: “I don’t know if there is another big club where the supporters have a love like the supporters have a love for this club.”

GASCOIGNE’S DISRESPECT FOR CELTIC LEGEND

There are some stories that get printed and I genuinely think, ‘What’s the point in that?’

A bit like if a tabloid writes about a duck eating butter. You know those kind of stories I’m on about. A ‘slow news day’ is what we call them.

One such story was written by The Sun, (yes forgive me, but at least you don’t now need to click on it) where ex imaginary flute player, Paul Gascoigne recollects the time he “almost” signed for Kenny Dalglish but now reveals the reason why he didn’t, and it is quite bizarre, “I didn’t want to leave [Newcastle], but I had no choice.

“I spoke to Dalglish and I did not understand a word he said. So that deal went out the window.”

‘He couldn’t understand a word he said’. Amazing, disrespectful and said without a hint of irony of self awareness.

Here we are talking about a guy who’s tongue is about 3 seconds ahead of his teeth when he talks. A guy who spent a decent part of his career in Italy with Lazio (how did he understand the Italians?) and a guy who ‘didn’t know’ the connotations of imaginary flute playing in a Glasgow Derby.

But then I ask myself, ‘How was Kenny such a successful manager if players couldn’t understand him?’ With 3 English First Division titles, 1 Premier League title, 2 FA Cups, 1 league cup, 4 charity shields and and a Football League Super Cup, I can see Gascoigne’s point. But then I see all the medals the midfield misfit has amassed and I stand corrected.

Gascoigne, for all his genius as a footballer, was also a skidmark on the professional game with his well documented conduct pre and post match. He really should think twice before slating one the games true professionals and legends.

Deleted Mystery Tweet Claims Celtic Star Is “Free Agent”

Leigh Griffiths has been the subject of intense speculation since it was first revealed that Celtic may not be taking up the option of extending his contract by a further year.

With the former Scotland hitman being linked with a return to his old club, Hibs,  it is still not known whether or not Griffiths will, in fact, remain at the Hoops. Until now.

This afternoon, Griffiths brother Aaron, tweeted a cryptic message which seemed to suggest that Griffiths has in fact been freed, “Not without a contract from Celtic he won’t he’s a free agent as far as I’m aware”.

The tweet was screenshot by user @Conor67_ as it was swiftly deleted which prompted many fans to wonder if the popular striker has in fact been released by the club.

Griffiths has not been without his controversies this season as his well reported off field issues have seriously impacted his ability to not only break through to the Celtic first team, but also the national squad.

The Celtic support are split on whether or not Griffiths should be offered a new deal for next season, but with Patryk Klimala already gone and Odsonne Edouard looking more likely to be heading to Leicester City, the question is not whether Celtic can afford to extend Griffiths contract but can they afford not to?

“POTENTIALLY £90m!” – JOURNALISTS AMAZING MANAGER GAMBLE CLAIM

Every Celtic supporter is familiar with Mark Guidi and his offerings, and sometimes rantings, whenever he appears on a radio football show.

When he used to work for Clyde1 on Superscoreboard, his overbearing ‘shout down’ style whenever he didn’t agree with a caller or if a caller challenged his opinion was a huge turn off.

Since he migrated over to The Go Radio Football Show, his style has calmed somewhat but he has come up with some belting quotes and this one really gets the juices going. When speaking about the Ange Postecoglou appointment, Guidi speaks of his reservations but then made an outlandish claim that even the Doc from Back to the Future isn’t qualified to make, “You couldn’t rule anything out. If he does have to come and isolate and like I said, nothing Ange Postecoglou, I’m not being disrespectful at all. I’m not trying to ridicule him with the old ‘Ange who?’, not at all.

If he’s offered the Celtic job, good luck to him. But I don’t know how Celtic have arrived to the conclusion that Ange Postecoglou is the right man to drive Celtic forward.

And that’s nothing against him. I just have a feeling that we’re missing something. Is it just buying time until Steve Clark is available? Possibly although he is still under contract. I don’t know, maybe I’m being very unfair.

“Celtic are in the Champions League qualifiers in July and August. That’s 30 million quid. If you win the league this season. It’s another 30 million quid because you’re right into the Champions League so that’s 60 million pounds.

“And you’re 30 million pounds of season ticket money, and as we all know, we all know Celtic supporters are swithering. If you want to add all that up that’s potentially 90 million pounds in the next year based on a large show on who your next manager is going to be and with the greatest respect to Ange Postecoglou, it’s a strange one for me.”

Quite the claim for Guidi and very dramatic, but it still didn’t encourage any extra callers to challenge that because, well, you know. It’s really not worth it.

OUTSPOKEN PUNDIT PUMMELS BOARD WITH HYPOCRITICAL DEFENCE OF LENNON AND HAMMOND SIGNING POLICY

There has been a lot said about Celtic’s hunt for a new manager. The Celtic board have, quite rightly, been lambasted for their handling of the Eddie Howe affair and now they are being held to account for the potential shambles of the Ange Postecoglou appointment.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying the Postecoglou appointment IS a shambles, but the circus that has surrounded it is.

Speaking in his weekly column, Charlie Nicholas has criticised the board by, strangely, crediting the Lennon/Hammond regimes transfer policy, “Ange Postecoglou looks set to become Celtic manager – but how many top targets will he have missed out on by then? We had the Eddie Howe disaster but now they look to be finally in a position to land Postecoglou. There is no doubt that Neil Lennon and Nicky Hammond would have put transfer targets in place before they departed.”

What a strange comment. Are we talking about the same Hammond that identified Barkas, Duffy and Laxalt? The same Lennon that said he had been tracking Laxalt for almost two seasons before he managed to get him? Or the same two guys that identified Jonjoe “Pass it sideways” Kenny? And there have been many more!

This is coming from the same pundit, who just back in January said of the signing policy, “Celtic have gone backwards and the signings have been poor. They were lazy about the signings.” The hypocrisy is incomprehensible.

Sometimes I genuinely think these “pundits” just need to take a deep breath before speaking or writing, which actually makes what he said worse as writing requires a degree of thinking. Nope, wait. It makes sense now!

LEADING CELTIC PODCASTER DESTROYS LENNON’S “NEW BREED” QUOTE IN ONE SINGLE TWEET

I genuinely don’t know what Neil Lennon’s thought process was regarding “that” interview published yesterday. I understand he needs to come out swinging and give his side of the story, I get that, but his complete revisionism of the history of last season is astounding.

Lennon seems to have the opinion that the supporters turned on him because of a home cup defeat against Ross County back in November last year, “That was the first cup defeat in 35/36 games. It was the end of an unbelievable cycle of success and for them to be treated that way was bewildering. They should have been lauded for it rather than abused.

“They were getting pelted with missiles. It was very sad. There was a new breed of supporters that I had nothing in common with and who belie the values of the club.”

Lennon’s “new breed” of supporter attack certainly did not endear him to the fans. Many of them still believe he is a legend at the club despite the calamity of last season. I wonder what they think of him now?

Popular Celtic podcaster Paul John Dykes completely blows his the former Celtic boss’s claim with a single tweet that was precise and to the point, “And an old breed of supporters who you have absolutely nothing in common with.” and the reaction was met with widespread agreement.

Lennon has chosen to forget the team lost out on the Champions League to a mediocre Hungarian side at home, in a one off tie.

But more importantly, in the same month as the cup defeat he had chosen to forget the he led the team to an 8-2 aggregate humping against a Czech team that should be nowhere near Celtic. And a 2-2 draw away to Hibs where two goals in the last 10 mins saved Celtic from further embarrassment.

Lennon’s interview achieved nothing except to alienate himself further from the fans and stain his overall legacy at Celtic Park.

ENGLISH MEDIA REPORT EPL “BID BEING PREPARED” FOR WANTAWAY STAR

As the news broke of Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer’s intentions of quitting the Hoops in the summer, reports in the English media suggest that Norwich City are set to table a bid for the Norwegian.

It was expected that Ajer would be heading to the English Premier League after speculation that Newcastle United were favourites to land the towering defender with an £8m bid, but with Ajer entering the last year of his current contract, the price Celtic would hope to receive could be a lot less than they had hoped.

Ajer said of his future today, “With one year left of my contract, that would be the best solution for me and my club. Something is going to happen this summer.

“There are of course many rumours. Right now it’s just rumours. I have one year left on my contract with Celtic and I relate to it, but something will probably happen this summer.

“I have one year left and will be loyal to the club. For both me and Celtic to get the best possible starting point, it probably makes sense that it happens this year.

After reports linking him with a £20m move to AC Milan at the start of the season, Ajer may be resigned to EPL relegation mediocrity as a move to consistent drop zone club Newcastle United or, as expected, Norwich will do nothing for the defender’s medal haul, although it will significantly top up his bank balance.
