‘That cost Mark Lawwell his job’ – One reason for Celtic’s Head of Recruitment’s Parkhead exit

Celtic Park

Away from football on the pitch for a minute, the Celtic fans discuss what’s happening behind the scenes as Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen for next season.

One thing that has hamstrung the Celtic manager this year is the club’s recruitment policy. Buying low to sell high has exposed us not just on the European scene but domestically also.

Players like Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki have struggled to make any kind of impact as Brendan Rodgers clearly thinks they are not good enough.

With eight players brought in last summer, only Luis Palma has made any kind of impact and it has raised serious questions about the role of Mark Lawwell as the head of recruitment.

Lawwell has wasted millions of Celtic’s pounds

It’s not just how we’ve recruited that’s been an issue this season. When we decide to sign a player, the length of contract that has been handed out has been ridiculous considering these players came to Celtic as an unknown quantity.

And John ‘Yogi’ Hughes of A Celtic State of Mind believes that the wasted millions on these contracts is one of the reasons Lawwell has been shown the door at Paradise.

Hughes said (A Celtic State of Mind), “We have our whole load of guys on five-year contracts we might never get out the door.

“And I don’t know how you manage that situation. Because if you’re going to be throwing out five-year contracts, it seems like a good idea if these guys have potential and that was the whole point.

“I suspect that maybe the thing that cost Mark Lawwell his job.

“Because if you’re saying that these guys have enough quality, they have enough potential, they have a high enough ceiling that it doesn’t matter what happens we’re going to make money and then they don’t kick a ball and they don’t show any signs of being the quality that we need, then you’ve just handed them several million pounds.

“As well as the signing fee, millions and millions and millions of pounds in wages and we can’t get them out the door.

“If they choose not to leave there’s nothing we can do.”

You can’t really argue with that point. How much money per week is sitting about Lennoxtown and on the bench because they are simply not good enough?

It doesn’t bear thinking about.
