“A big battering ram”, “Very similar to GG” – Celtic fans get excited over recent transfer rumours

Sydney van Hooijdonk celebrating a goal.

Celtic’s pursuit to add new players to their ranks continues this month and as the fans watch patiently for an announcement by the club, news that Sydney van Hooijdonk is on Brendan Rodgers’ radar has created some excitement.

The Dutch u21 international has been continually linked with a Parkhead move for a number of months now and with news ramping up that Celtic’s interest is real, the supporters seem delighted that van Hooijdonk may well be the second January signing this year.

Popular social media account, Celtic Gossip, asked the Hoops support if any of them know anything about the 23-year-old and the response it got was extremely positive.

Celtic fans are excited by Sydney van Hooijdonk

On this thread on X, one fan wrote, “An average of a goal every other game in the Dutch league.

Not as prolific as gio was there. But could be a good backup or plan B option and is young obviously too so room to improve.

“Loan with an option probably make sense?”

Another compared him to a former Celtic favourite, “Only the videos I’ve managed to find & he looks very similar to GG…

“Good in the air, strong, can move & looks a real poacher.

“What we’re needing.

“The way it’s going I can see BR opting for a more physical striker over Kyogo unless we sort the supply.”

Another fan said van Hooijdonk would be a great alternative to Kyogo, “A big battering ram who’s a penalty box finisher, a good alternative to Kyogo.”

But another fan suggested he would prefer a current striker on the SPFL, “Would prefer Miovski from Aberdeen. More likely window will pass with Khun as our signing.”

Van Hooijdonk is struggling for game time and goals at Bologna as he has scored just one goal in 11 appearances for the Serie A side.

Reports that van Hooijdonk wants to leave Bologna could benefit Rodgers’ pursuit of the youngster and with just less than 18 months left on his contract, it wouldn’t cost the earth to sign him.

With just under three days left of the window to go you can be sure that there will be plenty of updates on this and other rumours surrounding Celtic’s transfer business.
