“Rodgers took a back seat” – Keith Jackson makes Celtic summer transfer claim

Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers.

Many Celtic fans will claim they knew this already, but the club will heavily deny it.

Brendan Rodgers‘ authority over Celtic’s summer spending has been scrutinised ever since the Hoops manager pressed home the need to add quality to the squad.

Rodgers told at the Celtic AGM that he was the man who had the last word on all of Celtic’s summer business this season.

Speaking to Celtic TV, Rodgers said about the summer recruitment, “No player has been pushed onto me.

“We have a structure and set-up and we are planning for longer term in our signing strategy. I make the final decision on whether we sign a player.”

So why then is Rodgers now crying about quality if he agreed to sign up all these players? It makes no sense. Until you read this claim by journalist, Keith Jackson.

Brendan Rodgers’ transfers were not his idea – Keith Jackson

Writing in the Daily Record, Jackson said, “Rodgers took a back seat in the summer at a time when Lawwell’s son Mark was heading up a £20 million recruitment drive.

“The new manager may technically have rubber-stamped many or even all of those signings but these ‘projects’ were not his idea.

“Instead there was a period of overlap between Postecoglou’s sudden departure and Rodgers’ return. Celtic had to get on with business during those weeks and it feels safe to assume the former boss had a hand in putting those plans in place.”

This is quite the claim and it will be interesting to see if the club comes out and refutes this.

Celtic are at extreme pains to point out that the manager is the man in charge. If he is, then we should be giving Rodgers a harder time for wasting millions upon millions of pounds on players clearly not good enough to pull on the green and white hoops.
