Ian Blackford speaks out after Hibs statement on Rangers fans’ sectarian singing as the Celtic support watch on

Ian Blackford

Hibs took a bold step last night and released a statement in the aftermath of the sectarian singing aimed towards Martin Boyle in the Scottish Cup on Sunday night.

As the Hibs striker lay on the ground unconscious, the Ibrox support sand ‘die a fenian b-st-rd’, there was widespread condemnation from all football supporters and pundits.

Well, maybe not the pundits. Because whenever the TV companies or pundits hear this kind of singing they continually turn a deaf ear whilst amazingly not only hearing, but also apologising, for any swearing picked up by their microphones.

However, with Westminster MP Ian Blackford now stepping into the debate, maybe, just maybe this will shine the light on the sectarian curse that has blighted our game for decades

For the second time this week, Blackford has stepped into Scottish football after lambasting the refereeing performance in his team’s 2-0 defeat to Rangers.

And whilst his previous tweet criticising the match officials is likely to do nothing, maybe a Westminster MP now stepping into the furore will help push the SFA and the SPFL into action to rid us of this cancer in our game.

It may be wishful thinking on my part and the cynic in me says he only stepped in because this didn’t involve Celtic.

Because the truth of the matter is that whenever Celtic is involved, Blackford, like the rest of the politicians in the UK and Scotland are strangely quiet on the matter.
