It’s a funny old game when Harry Redknapp tips a former Rangers manager for the Liverpool job. Especially one that was humiliated by Celtic during his Ibrox tenure.
Redknapp was asked who he thought should succeed Jurgen Klopp when the legendary Kop manager leaves Merseyside at the end of the season when he suggested this.
Quite incredible seeing as Steven Gerrard was constantly embarrassed up in Scotland as Celtic swept to a nine-in-a-row and a Quadruple Treble.
In fact, the only time Gerrard won a trophy was during the COVID season and that was mainly down to Celtic imploding and Rangers having the pressure off them due to the baying Ibrox crowd being absent that season.
Celtic’s domination during Steven Gerrard’s Rangers tenure
Gerrard arrived at Ibrox in April 2018 just before Celtic were completing the Double Treble. During his time at Ibrox, Gerrard’s head-to-head record was pretty decent.
In his first season, we faced Rangers four times winning two and losing two. Not that it mattered because we went ahead and completed the Treble Treble anyway.
In his second season, Gerrard faced us three times winning one and losing the other two. Again, this is irrelevant because that was when Neil Lennon sealed the world record Quadruple Treble. [Transfermarkt]
Gerrard’s only success was the league title he won during COVID. One solitary trophy in a four-year spell where St Johnstone picked up more silverware. He promised more trophies to the Ibrox hordes but, sadly, he could not deliver. [BBC]
He eventually left Rangers to go and take over at Aston Villa, much to the annoyance of the Rangers fans, where he was shown the door after less than one year in charge and a win percentage of just over 33%.
So yeah Harry, give him the job. If you want to undo the hard work Klopp did over the last eight years or so in one season, Gerrard is your man.
