Rangers dying in 2012 made the shares of jelly and ice cream double almost overnight as the Celtic fans partied at the news.
We all remember the Celtic supporters doing the conga at away grounds when the Ibrox club slipped into administration and we also all remember the look on Jim White’s face on Sky Sports when he had to make the announcement 12 years ago.
BDO wound up Rangers just a few short weeks ago as the Ibrox club was consigned to the history books but as Nicolas Kuhn’s agent spoke about his Celtic future today, the Parkhead support will recognise him as one of the names that helped bury their rivals.
Nicolas Kuhn’s agent is a former Rangers EBT recipient
As part of the death of Rangers, many of their former players and managers took part in an EBT scheme as the Ibrox club tried to outspend Celtic just to keep up with us.
Celtic fans will remember a player called Christian Nerlinger. The German was signed by the club from Borussia Dortmund and to afford his wages, Rangers paid him a total of £1.8m in an EBT.
That amount was much higher than Rangers manager, Alex McLeish, who was paid a total of £1.7m through the scheme.
Nerlinger’s EBT was the highest amount paid out to a player by the Ibrox club and it hammered one nail into the coffin of the dead Rangers.
Nicolas Kuhn is ‘never’ leaving Celtic
On a plus note, Nerlinger was in the news today with this little nugget of good news for the Celtic supporters.
Nerlinger told the Daily Record, “The speculation is not an issue for us. We have found a home for Nicolas at Celtic.”
“We are not, never, walking out on Celtic without being together with the club because this success story was created by Celtic.
“I know from my time at Rangers it was very hard to get something out of the television rights, so, of course, they need to find these success stories – identify a player, buy him for £3million and sell him for £20-£25million – but we will do everything together with the club.
“We are very grateful for how Brendan Rodgers developed the player.”
So that’s two reasons Celtic fans have got to send Nerlinger a Christmas card this year.
