Alfredo Morelos vs Celtic

‘No joke’ – Bitter Ryan Jack shares what Alfredo Morelos did to Steven Gerrard before 2020 Celtic vs Rangers cup final

The Banter Years is what makes writing about Celtic and Rangers so enjoyable in this job.

And none more so than Alfredo Morelos had helped to keep The Banter Years alive during his time in Glasgow facing Celtic.

The Colombian was a constant joke figure for the Celtic supporters and it was little wonder considering his antics caused Rangers a lot of pain during his five years at Ibrox.

But it was what Morelos did before the 2020 League Cup final against Celtic that really caused a bust-up between him and Rangers manager, Steven Gerrard, which left Ryan Jack and his teammates shocked.

Morelos’ mini AWOL before Celtic cup final

This was the year that Rangers had the chance to stop Celtic’s bid for the Quadruple Treble. Celtic were dominant in this era and the new club were starved of success.

And here, Jack shares how Morelos derailed Rangers’ preparations for the big day with a story that even the Celtic fans will find absolutely hilarious.

Jack said, “I never forget we played Celtic in the League Cup final. Celtic won 1-0 with the offside goal with Jullien.

“We were unreal in the game. Buff (Alfredo Morelos) missed, honestly, about eight sitters and should have scored five and missed a penalty.

“And the day before the cup final, we are training at 11am and it gets to like, half 10 and he’s like, ‘Has anyone seen Buff’ and we’re like, ‘No, he’s not in.’. The day before a cup final.

“The gaffer was like, ‘Right, we’re gonna need to delay training’, the day before a cup final. He’s still no in and we’re phoning him and he’s not answering his phone. Phones off.

“So we’re on the pitch at like half-eleven and no joke, he comes out with not a care in the world, boots untied, socks tucked into the training joggers, and just comes out like struts onto the pitch and then just tries to join in.

“And the gaffer was obviously raging and he’s like, ‘I’m no fu–ing talking to him.'”

Wee Jack couldn’t hide his bitterness there could he with his ‘offside goal’ claim and that’s what makes this clip even better.

Even though it was onside, the fact that they believe this goal shouldn’t have been allowed fills me with great joy because, four years on, the pain crying Jack feels tastes just as delicious as his tears did back then.
