Why what Brendan Rodgers did to John Beaton at Ibrox was a ‘masterclass’ in Celtic PR

Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers after the Rangers game

Well now that the Celtic fans have an extra Glasgow Derby to look forward to, attention is likely to turn to who will be put in charge of the Scottish Cup Final in May.

The Hampden clash is the showpiece occasion of the season and the SFA will need to put their best match officials to in charge.

After the number of refereeing displays we have seen this season, it will be difficult to pick out exactly who that will be.

The amount of criticism aimed at the officials this season especially from the Celtic camp will make the decision to appoint a referee even more difficult.

But the SFA don’t do themselves any favours. After the John Beaton Hearts controversy they put him in charge of the Ibrox Glasgow Derby where another mistake cost Celtic the chance to stretch their lead at the top of the table.

But it’s what Brendan Rodgers did at Ibrox that impressed A Celtic State of Mind’s, Paul John Dykes.

Rodgers was ‘bawling’ at Beaton

Dykes said (A Celtic State of Mind), “When he went over to VAR, if you watch back the footage when John Beaton went over to look at the VAR right, and you can see Brendan is absolutely bawling at him.

“I don’t know what he’s saying but he’s bawling and something at John Beaton and he’s probably saying this is ridiculous that you’re going to actually going to go against your original decision. Probably used different language to that.

“You can see that Beaton shouts something back at him. So I think it’s a master class in PR. He is coming out and he’s given you all that, ‘Oh, he’s one of the finest in the job.’

“Behind the scenes? He’s not saying that. No chance. Absolutely no chance.”

And Dykes is correct. Publicly backing Beaton is not only necessary in the context of our game but also in terms of the referee not letting his unconscious bias penalise us.

Because it does. And it will again. And if Beaton gets either of the two remaining Glasgow Derbies, whatever his role is, it is crucial that he’s not given any further ammo to make an honest mistake in favour of the Ibrox club again.
