Dutch legend destroys Calvin Bassey after finding out what Celtic fans already knew

It seems that it’s not just *Rangers that are getting slated in the Champions League this year.

Even their ex-players are taking a bit of a hammering as they get to grip with life outside of Glasgow.

Take Calvin Bassey for example.

Reportedly *Rangers most expensive export, Bassey left the club for around £20m this summer as he looked to develop his career at Ajax.

It’s not all gone to plan for the 22-year-old as he has seen his Ajax career get off to a stuttering start after being ordered off on his debut.

But it was the loss to Napoli in Wednesday nights Champions League game that led to Dutch legend and two time Eredivisie champion René van der Gijp to question Ajax’s recruitment of the youngster.

van der Gijp raged [Daily Record], “If you spend €24m for Bassey, you must have seen him all year, right?

€24m, how high do you set the bar?

They spend € 5m for Francisco Conceição, fine, but €24m for Bassey. No.”

This is not news to us. Clearly a decent player when in the SPFL, Bassey has flattered to deceive and it’s not as if Celtic fans never knew this already.

The defender was anonymous as Ange Postecoglou’s men battered Rangers 3-0 at Celtic Park and then 2-1 at Ibrox last season.

Yes, in Europe he was good for the club but it’s easy to play with freedom in games that fans don’t expect the team to win.

At Ajax, it’s a whole different kettle of fish. They don’t just demand success domestically, but also in Europe.

And Bassey looks like he is being found out.
