A sharp studio exchange between Pat Bonner and Stephen Craigan has exposed a clear divide over how Celtic’s title challenge should be interpreted.
The disagreement centres on whether Celtic’s success would represent genuine achievement or simply expectation meeting reality.
Bonner repeatedly frames the season as one where context matters, stressing disruption and overall difficulty Celtic have faced this season.
Craigan challenges that framing by focusing on resources, structure, and whether Celtic have actually underperformed relative to their standing.
The debate escalates into a broader argument over narrative control, with both pundits offering sharply different interpretations of what a potential title win would actually mean.
Stephen Craigan Questions Celtic Recruitment as Pat Bonner Defends Season Context
The core disagreement begins with how the title race itself should be framed, particularly around the idea of Celtic as an underdog.
Pat Bonner said, “Can I say to you, if Celtic won this league and they’re still in it, absolutely in it. I think it’s an unbelievable achievement by Martin O’Neill and the staff and the players to a point.”
Stephen Craigan immediately challenges the framing of the argument, questioning the narrative being used.
Craigan responded, “It’s not an underdog story though Packie is it?”
Bonner’s reply is direct and emphatic, rejecting the label outright.
Bonner said, “It’s not an underdog story.”
Craigan then shifts the focus onto structural expectation, highlighting resources and accountability.
“When you consider the resources they have, of course, it’s not everyone else’s fault that Celtic haven’t managed themselves right and haven’t spent it right and haven’t got the best out of the players.”
Despite that criticism, Craigan still acknowledges the likely outcome of the title race based on fixtures.
“But I agree,” the BBC pundit continued, “If he [Martin O’Neill] did win it, and to be fair, from four games at home out of six, you would like to think they’re a really strong position to win those six games, they are more than likely win the title.”
Celtic Title Race Verdict Split as Bonner and Craigan Clash Over Season Standards
The debate moves beyond simple prediction and into deeper interpretation of Celtic’s season as a whole.
Pat Bonner replied, “It should be achievable, but with all the things has happened, I’m just saying that if they do achieve it this year, at this point in time, with all of what we’ve witnessed, I think it would be an incredible achievement.”
Bonner then raises a wider question about how the title race should be judged.
“Now, is that down to Celtic being a real, top, championship winning title team, or is it down maybe to just other other teams, maybe not being able to handle the last run?”
He adds a blunt assessment of the season’s inconsistency but maintains Celtic’s position in the race.
“Celtic, everything this year has been so poor, in many, many aspects, but they’re still there. That’s incredible. It’s an incredible thing.”
Craigan’s earlier stance remains is symptematic of how a media narrative has formed about Celtic’s title defence as they ignore the injury problems and four managerial changes the Parkhead club has had to negotiate.
It was good to hear Bonner correct that narrative and give Celtic the credit they will deserve if O’Neill somehow manages to ensure this title stays at Celtic Park.
