Johnny Kenny’s purple patch of form at Celtic under Martin O’Neill has come to a shuddering halt.
The young Celtic striker is highly-rated by the FAI and it seemed that his talent was coming to the fore under O’Neill in November.
Three goals in four games for Kenny with his first Celtic goal against Rangers, gave the young Irishman a huge boost just before Wilfried Nancy took over.
However, under Nancy, Kenny is goalless as he toils in front of goal despite Celtic creating a clutch of chances for him to put away.
And that has led to journalist and pundit Mark Guidi to deliver a scathing verdict on the Celtic striker and it’s not what Kenny would want to hear.
‘Not a Celtic No. 9’: Mark Guidi’s damning verdict on Johnny Kenny
Kenny has five goals to his name at Celtic this season but has not scored in his last six games under Nancy.
And that has led Guidi to deliver a ‘brutal truth’ to the Celtic striker.
Guidi told The Go Radio Football Show, “He’s not a Celtic number nine. If you just want to talk about the brutal truth. He’s not a Celtic number nine.
“If you want to be a champion, if you want to win a title, retain a title, you’re not going to do that with Johnny Kenny as your number nine.
“Back up, your number three striker, fine, if the boys want to do that, but it needs to be better than that.
“I said it last week, you look at Celtic and Rangers, they’re number nines that they have at the clubs at the moment, I’ve never known a dearth of talent at number nine that both Celtic and Rangers have.”
Why Nancy’s system at Celtic demands an elite finisher
It has never been so evident that Celtic require a proven striker for Nancy’s system after the latest domestic defeats.
Here is a list of the number of shots Celtic had in their defeats in which Kenny played:
- Hearts: 15
- St Mirren: 10
- Dundee United: 18
- Aberdeen: 31
- Livingston: 18
Kenny failed to score in any of these games despite Celtic creating enough chances to fire of 92 shots in total.
Nancy must priortise a striker this January because if the doesn’t, then he will oversee the most embarrassing league title loss in living memory.
