Of all the takes on Celtic’s defeat to FC Midtjylland, Tome English’s must be up there with the worst.
The BBC reporter is well-known for his anti-Celtic comments whenever there is turmoil at Parkhead.
English didn’t waste any time to put the boot into Celtic but what he wrote about O’Neill after Celtic lost to Midtjylland has particularly annoyed the Hoops support.
And they wasted no time in sending the BBC man a message after his latest column called Celtic’s record in Europe an ‘abomination’.
Tom English hits back at the ‘Martin O’Neill Effect’ on Celtic
There is no doubt that O’Neill’s appointment has lifted Celtic as a club and the fans.
But English labelled the ‘effect’ as ‘overblown’ after the Hoops’ defeat in the Europa League.
English wrote on BBC Sport Scotland, “The whole ‘Martin O’Neill Effect’ thing was so overblown by so many people.
“His team beat a poor Falkirk and took extra-time to beat a 10-man Rangers. Some small signs of improvement along the way, but it was hugely exaggerated.
“This is an awful chasing.
“Celtic’s record in Europe, particularly away from home in Europe, is an abomination and another grim chapter is getting written tonight.”

Celtic fans roast Tom English’s Martin O’Neill comments
The Celtic fans, as ever, responded immediately to English’s comments and let the BBC man know exactly what they thought.

This Celtic fan had a bit of perspective:
Just played a huge semi final at Hamden against our rivals on Sunday.

Would rather of won that and lost against the Europa League leaders.
@celticfitba was having none of the BBC reporter’s comments and said, “Cheap shot from Tom. Anyone who watched Celtic prior to O’Neill coming in can see the improvement since he was appointed.
“He gave the club a big lift & the players looked like the shackles had come off. Tonight was poor, yes, but no one was anticipated we’d go there & dominate.”

@RabCorbett2 was scathing in his criticism of English and said, “That’s a shocking attack on a 73 yr old footballing legend. Who’s remit, scope of work here is clearly a stop gap. Interim role.
“He’s not a magician and was never going to fix all ills in 3 weeks.”
Not many Celtic supporters thought O’Neill would take the Bhoys to a team flying high in the Europa League and go and dominate them.
The comments from English were daft, and tasteless and should be ignored.
