Celtic fans will love Michael Gannon calling out Des Roache’s verdict on Rangers VAR flashpoint

Celtic fans have a deep distrust of current and former SFA referees.

Experience has shown that former referees really enjoy the Rangers after-dinner circuit where they regail telling stories about how they bumped Celtic with some of their biased decisions back in the day.

Hell, Celtic fans still need to deal with having a self-confessed Rangers fan in John Beaton officiating their games so it is little wonder the Parkhead support look at SFA officials past and present suspicously.

And that suspicion will only deepen further after Des Roache’s bizarre verdict on Rangers’ disallowed goal was superbly taken apart by Celtic supporting journalist Michael Gannon.

Ex-SFA man Roache roasted for Rangers VAR verdict, Celtic fans won’t be surprised

Roache believes Rangers’ disallowed goal against Hearts should have stood and rejects the notion that the Tynecastle club’s goalkeeper was fouled.

Roache told Hotline Live, “I thought that was a goal.”

Gannon: “You thought that was a goal?”

Roache: “Yeah. I don’t think the goalkeeper was having as much contact with Aagaard as they were each. And I think when you see it, I don’t think the keeper even complained about it.”

Gannon: “He’s got his hand on the throat in that picture there. He’s got him by the chops. That’s got to be a free kick surely.”

Roache: “But look at the goalkeeper. He’s got two hands his shoulder. His right legs right across him as well. So he’s impeding him and he’s got him by the throat.”

Gannon: “Forget VAR, I’d be phoning the police with that kind of assault”

It’s this kind of opinion about a clear foul that makes Celtic fans distrust officials and even those who try and give an ‘impartial’ opinion on refereeing standards in the game.
