Celtic fans will be questioning how much tax rebate Rangers have ‘claimed’ from HMRC

Rangers and the HMRC have given Celtic fans some brilliant laughs over the last ten years or more.

When Rangers died, the Celtic fans were having a party in the Champions League as sales of ice cream and jelly went through the roof.

BDO wound up the old Rangers earlier this season as the new club continues to lurch from one disaster to the next both on and off the park.

And it seems that the new Rangers could be in trouble with HMRC after an investigation into a tax rebate scheme shared how the Ibrox club have claimed cash back from the government agency.

How much Rangers have claimed from HMRC and why it should interest Celtic fans

The Scottish Sun has reported that Rangers have claimed ‘a profit of £748,000’ in their accounts from the tax agency.

The report states, “The Gers banked £500,000 in 20/21, after £188k in 19/20, £26k in 18/19, and £34k in 17/18.

“Their total figure of £748,000 contrasts with £1.27m received by Dundee Utd and £1.28 from Hibs in recent seasons.”

Dundee United have been asked to pay back their rebate but are appealing the request. The report says it’s not yet known if the Ibrox club have been asked to do the same.

So what is the rebate for?

Rangers’ tax rebate will raise Celtic fans’ eyebrows

The report states, “These numbers are under the spotlight in the wake of a Times investigation which revealed that 28 sports teams claimed £13m under the scheme, with HMRC keen to recoup sums which they say were meant for ‘science and tech’.

“Under the rules of the scheme, clubs should only apply if it has made a genuine advancement in science and technology that benefits the greater good, not just its own business.”

Like many Celtic supporters, we are interested to hear of what genuine advancements Rangers have made in science and technology. I wonder if they will claim that coming back from the dead counts?
