Dave King responds to takeover rumour as Celtic fans discover bizarre valuation of Rangers

In a season where Rangers have offered so many laughs to the Celtic support, it seems the laughs are set to continue after the latest rumour suggesting the Ibrox club is set to be taken over.

It sounds like every Rangers fan’s wet dream considering the state of their club’s finances and the general clown show that surrounds the Ibrox lot.

But as a report in City AM, Rangers were rumoured to be of interest to an American consortium for a takeover as Dave King was identified as a ‘willing seller’.

Responding to the report, King said (Sky Sports), “There is no truth whatsoever to the rumour that a USA billionaire – or anyone – has expressed any interest in acquiring Rangers.

“The club is going through a difficult phase that was largely self-inflicted and commenced with Douglas Park refusing to back Steven Gerrard’s ambition to kick on from 55.

“Self-interest should never be put ahead of our club. I am hoping that John Bennett turns things around. I know he will do everything in his power to do so.”

Rangers valuation will make the Celtic fans laugh

The most bizarre part of the report from City AM was that the consortium valued the Ibrox club at around £150m.

Why would that be bizarre? Well, the fact that a cash-rich and successful club like Celtic made the top 50 most valuable clubs in 2023 at over £90m beating the likes of Lazio, Valencia and Porto with Rangers nowhere to be seen, where has the £150m valuation come from?

Put it this way. In that list, Leicester City were relegated that year and they were valued at £144m and still placed 24th.

So where did this figure come from? They won a League Cup last season but Celtic won the double, raked in millions in transfer fees and Champions League cash and have a playing squad that is much more talented and worth millions more than Rangers.

Something doesn’t quite smell right here. But then, are we really all that surprised when it comes to any news financial or otherwise about that club?
