Journalist Tom English tweet regarding Ibrox atmosphere during Celtic Scottish Cup victory, March 2026.

Tom English makes a nonsensical claim about Celtic captain Callum McGregor ahead of Euro 2024 kick-off

As Scotland prepares to kick off their Euro 2024 campaign against Germany, the Celtic fans can look forward to catching a glimpse of their heroes on the world stage.

Make no mistake, the eyes of the world will be on the team just like they were in France 98 when Scotland gave the Brazilians a fright.

Hopefully, they can do the same on Friday night against the Germans but if what Tom English says about Callum McGregor comes to fruition, then Scotland can forget all about getting an opening day result.

Callum McGregor could be dropped by Scotland

Yeah, I know. I’ll get to why he’s talking nonsense in a minute but the BBC journalist thinks that McGregor dropping to the bench for the Euro opener in Munich is a possibility.

English said (Scottish Football Podcast), “It’s a good question. Well, I would say, let’s take the right wing-back position.

“I would imagine Anthony Ralston would play. I imagine he’ll start. But I wouldn’t fall off my chair with shock if he moves someone like Jack Hendry there to give back three of four of Handley, if he’s fit, and Tierney.

“I don’t think you do that. But maybe that’s in his mind. I think the big one is probably the central midfield, though.

“McTominay, Gilmour, McGinn and Christie started against the Netherlands because Callum McGregor was injured.

“They played exceptionally well for 70 minutes. Really, really clear chances, looked very fluent.

“Is he gonna go McTominay if he is fit? We haven’t seen him in these two friendlies. I know it’s almost sacrilegious to even suggest that Callum McGregor might not be in the starting lineup, but he might not be in the starting lineup.

“If he wants to go with McTominay, Gilmour, McGinn and Christie, the same four he had in Amsterdam, then McGregor misses out just as he did three years ago for the opening game in the last Euros.”

Let’s just forget that McGregor has been a mainstay in the Scotland team all throughout this qualifying campaign.

Let’s also just forget that had it not been for the Celtic captain’s contributions, wins against Spain and Norway just wouldn’t have happened.

How English can think that a Scotland midfield that got humped 4-0 by the Netherlands and got beat by Northern Ireland at Hampden minus McGregor is going to keep the Celtic captain out of the team is beyond me.

No wonder the Celtic fans have no time for his opinions. His anti-Celtic bias reeks and these comments have done him no favours in the Parkhead support.
