Celtic have a raft of memorable and legendary players and managers that currently reside in our history books.
Billy McNeill, Jimmy Johnstone, Willie Maley and Jock Stein are synonymous with the club just like present day legends like Martin O’Neill, Wim Jansen, Scott Brown and Brendan Rodgers.
But to recognise this legend, you have to go as far back as 1892.
Dan McArthur was once described as Willie Maley’s first ‘star goalkeeper’.
Signed in 1892, McArthur spent eleven years at the club making 120 appearances.
He won four league titles, two Scottish Cups and two Glasgow Cups in an era of football where anything went. There was not protection offered to ‘keepers in those days and his heroics between the sticks were often described as suicidal.
In the Celtic Wiki, a great quote popped up: “If they’re going to kill McArthur they’ll have to shoot him” – Tom Hynds
Because back then, keepers were subjected to outright assault and many were left unconscious after brutal challenges by opponents.
McArthur passed away in Shettleston in 1943.
The Celtic Graves Society plan to hold a commemoration at Eastern Necropolis Cemetery at the Gallowgate on Sunday, April 9 at 12.30pm.
