“Was I out of order? Probably” – Ferguson opens up on le Guen as Strachan ran riot

Ibrox Stadium

This was an epic Celtic season.

Gordon Strachan led us to the last 16 of the Champions League and was a bawhair away from a domestic treble had it not been for losing the league cup quarter final 5-4 on penalties to Falkirk.

Falkirk FFS.

When you look at the players we had in our squad I still can’t believe that. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Artur Boruc, Bobo Balde and Thomas Graveson.

Real quality players. But as Strachan took over Scotland, complacency took over at Ibrox under the tutelage of Paul le Guen.

At that time, le Guen was one of the hottest properties in European football and came to Glasgow to try and wrestle back the power from the East End.

He failed. Miserably and was sacked after an altercation with club captain, Barry Ferguson.

Ferguson opened up on the clash of personalities on The Go Radio Football Show and admitted that ‘probably’ he was out of order, “I was guilty of it keeping that [frustration] in.

And it was just, it was a build-up of frustration and at some stage we were, I think, fourth or fifth in the league.

And I’m thinking to myself, what’s going on here? You know, obviously it just it came after one game we had lost I think it was in Inverness and I just exploded after the game.

Was I out of order? I probably was but I just felt I had to say my piece.

As I said, I just thought there was an acceptance beginning to fester inside Rangers that it was okay.

You have a defeat, it was okay drop points, and no disrespect teams that you should be running over the top of.

I know sometimes that you’ll get you get a surprise result throughout the season like Celtic against St Mirren, a month or so back, but that was happening far too often for me.”

Ferguson let rip on what really happened on this video at what happened behind the scenes at Ibrox on this podcast a couple of years back:

It was all respectful, yeah until you let rip in front of the whole dressing room. Someone needs to tell him………..
