Mark Clattenburg shuts down Rangers penalty claims as Celtic turn up the heat

Mark Clattenburg delivers a blunt verdict on the Rangers penalty claim at Motherwell. See why the former ref backed the VAR decision as Celtic close the gap at the top.

The Scottish Premiership table looks really tight after Celtic beat Livingston and Hoops defender Stephen Welsh broke Rangers with a late Fir Park equaliser.

Rangers fans immediately screamed a refereeing conspiracy but all that was blown out of the water as our friends over at ACSOM showed how Celtic’s title defence is being harmed by ‘honest mistakes’ from the SFA officials.

In fact, we highlighted how it should have been Motherwell who were awarded a penalty against Rangers and not the other way about as the pressure of Celtic breathing down their neck threatens to break the Ibrox support.

So to get an impartial referees opinion, former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg clamps the Rangers fans and Celtic fans will spot exactly why.

Mark Clattenburg throws out ‘Rangers’ demand for a penalty’ as Celtic fans look on

‘Penalty Rangers’ has been a phrase synonymous with Celtic’s successes over the years.

But despite being awarded many dubious spot kicks, Clattenburg told the Ibrox support exactly why they were never going to get a life-saving penalty at Fir Park.

Clattenburg told Rangers News, “Rangers demand a penalty when Youssef Chermiti went down under a challenge from Elliott Watt.

“There was a contact, but I am not convinced that was enough contact for him to go down.

“I understand the referee’s decision to play on, and for sure, this would not be on VAR to make an intervention.”

The conspiracy theorists over at Ibrox will somehow look to link Clattenburg to Celtic is some crazy way to try and prove he is biased towards the Parkhead club.

But, in reality, they know that without their obligatory penalty, Rangers will struggle to fend off Celtic this season and will in all likelihood finish third this season.
