The ‘problem’ with Paulo Bernardo at Celtic

Before last night’s Celtic defeat to Dundee United, Paulo Bernarndo was nowhere to be seen.

The Portuguese midfielder, who was an almost ever-present in Brendan Rodgers’ matchday squad, has struggled for gametime this season as Bernanrdo drops out of Celtic’s plans.

Bernardo was immense for Celtic last season as Rodgers defended his title and won the League Cup.

But this season, he is nowhere to be seen and former Celtic boardmember Willie Haughey has an idea why.

Paulo Bernardo is not fit enough to play for Celtic

Bernardo is undoubtedly an extremely talented Celtic player. The former Portugal U21 captain was one of the best products to come out of his homeland.

But Haughey reckons the midfielder’s fitness is what’s holding back Bernardo at Celtic.

Haughey told the Let Me Be Frank podcast, “For me, Engels has been a big disappointment.”

McAvennie: “I think I would play Bernardo before him.”

Haughey: “Well, the problem with Bernardo is he’s not get any legs, right?

“He can’t get up and down the park, right? You know, you see him, he looks like he’d be a great five-a-side player, right?

“I’ve got to be honest with you, if I’ve got to play anybody, and to be fair Luke McCowan’s the same, they’re all good but we’ve got too many players who are the same.”

At 23, Bernardo should be able to run all day and then some.

If the midfielder is not fit enough to play the role Celtic need him to, that doesn’t bode well for the Portuguese star.

Hopefully, Bernardo will get a run in the team over the coming weeks to prove what he can do because when he gets going, he really is a special talent.
