The meltdown over at Rangers has made glorious viewing for Celtic supporters this season.
The dawn of the 49ers Enterprises investment in Rangers was meant to end Celtic’s domination this season.
In fact, Rangers fans were convinced that Scotland’s ‘richest club’ were back, and Celtic would soon scurry into the doldrums of the 90s.
As it happens, the complete opposite has happened as Rangers spiral out of control and Celtic sit top of the Scottish Premiership table.
Which makes one of the Celtic targets Russell Martin was set when he arrived as the new Rangers boss look rather ridiculous now as Phil Mac Giolla Bhain reveals.
Where Rangers want to be as Celtic sit top of the league
Rangers fans got way ahead of themselves before the season even started when it came to challenging Celtic.
The 49ers were more pragmatic but even this easy target that was set for Martin now looks utterly ridiculous.
In his latest blog, Phil said, “Young Master Martin has already achieved the most important one of his KPIs so far, which is Europa League Group Stage participation.
“That’s number one, and he’s delivered on that.
“The next one is to come second in the SPFL, within single digits of Celtic.
“Obviously, that isn’t the current state of play, but it is September 2025, not April 2026.”
As Phil said, it is only September but even a target as easy as this should have been achievable after the vast sums of money Martin has spent in the summer.
Not to even win the league but to come second! How the standards on the pitch have fallen.
But at least off it they haven’t as the Ibrox basket case gives us another superb addition to The Banter Years volumes.
