‘Not true’ – Anthony Joseph bats away fantasy Rangers transfer rumour for player ‘with Rodgers connection’

Do Celtic need to be wary of the challenge from Rangers this season?

Not from what we can see. Yes, Rangers have new owners in the 49ers, but as yet the Ibrox club have signed no one of note that should have Celtic worried.

Celtic have signed Kieran Tierney and six others so far. Fans may believe that the others, with the exception of Benjamin Nygren, are all not good enough to step into the Hoops first-team.

However, there has been a daft transfer rumour doing the rounds surrounding the Ibrox club about a player who has links to Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers that has been savagely batted away by Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph.

Celtic-linked Jamie Vardy Rangers rumour is ‘not true’

Jamie Vardy has been tenuously spoken about to join Celtic in the past but it appears that Rangers fans are convinced that the 49ers will splash the cash to bring him to Glasgow.

Joseph said on Off The Underside, “We’ve been told that any links to Rangers are not true. And certainly at this stage obviously things could change if he doesn’t get a club, he might lower his wage.

“His wage demands are the top end they’re still Premier League level. I mean I think people were even talking about him for Celtic even a couple of months ago with the Rodgers connection.

“And Celtic would not be prepared to pay what he is currently looking for at the moment and Rangers wouldn’t either.”

When Celtic were told to sign Jamie Vardy

Celtic were told to sign Vardy by former Scotland striker Paul Dickov.

Dickov said, “To go to Scotland, I don’t know. Maybe the obvious link-up is with Brendan at Celtic after his time at Leicester with Jamie. I still think he’s got a lot to offer.

“You still see him even now as a 38-year-old veteran. He’s still playing off the shoulders of centre-halves in the Premier League. He’s still buzzing around, closing people down, scoring goals.

“So I still think he’s got a lot to offer down here, whether that be in the Premier League or top-level Championship, or Wrexham who are promoted to the Championship now and have been linked.

“You look at him, he looks fit as a fiddle. He probably could go on and play for another two seasons at the top level as well.

“So I’m pretty sure there’ll be a lot of top clubs still in for Jamie Vardy because he’s still got a hell of a lot to offer on the pitch and off the pitch well.”

He might have a lot to offer, but it certainly should not be at Celtic.
