Now this is a big ‘if’. Bear in mind Celtic supporters have had this Rangers ‘takeover’ being shoved down their necks for weeks now.
As yet, nothing has happened and as yet, Celtic fans are just ridiculing the Rangers support who seem to be getting ahead of themselves by claiming they are going to be the richest club in Scotland.
Let’s not mention the fact that UEFA’s FFP rules will reign in any spending that they think they might be able to do but lets also not specifically mention the fact that the millions Rangers fans think they are going to get to challenge Celtic is simply not going to happen.
You see, when a real journalist outside of the succulent lamb brigade actually does their job, this is what tends to get found out.
Rangers will not get ‘tens of millions’ to challenge Celtic
Journalist, Nick Harris, who has a reputation of investigating football deals has had his ear close to the ground on this story. So when asked by the superb Alan Morrison of The Huddlebreakdown if there was any substance to how much cash the Ibrox club will get, Harris didn’t sugar coat the truth.
Harris told The Huddlebreakdown, “Given that one motivation for a Rangers takeover, as I wrote, seems to be a potential flip, whether in 3 years or 5 or whatever, a logical assumption has to be that the asset value of the club HAS to grow for that to happen.
“That will only really happen if Rangers become vaguely competitive again and perhaps even threaten in the coming years to qualify for the Champions League. How do you become competitive? By having better players. How do you get better players?
“Develop them over years, which will obviously be one aim. But hiring them (better players than now) is quickest, either via buying or loaning, both of which cost money in fees and / or wages.
“Thus I WOULD expect – if the takeover happens and it remains an if – there to be investment in playing squad. But not “megabucks” money, certainly not tens of millions on players, let alone hundreds of millions. That just isn’t going to happen. Some millions, in the low single-digit millions range?
“That would be my best guess from what I’ve heard. But as with the tone of the whole piece, there is SO much more we still don’t than we do. And the fact that none of the key players from the 49ers side have said a word on the record, or indeed answered a single one of the questions I’ve put forward … we don’t know.”
So there will be no huge kitty then? In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Despite the wealthy ownership, Rangers will be made to live within their means if this ‘takeover’ actually goes ahead.
Aw well, I suppose Celtic supporters will need to wait to see Ronaldo or Messi trudging up Govan with Will Ferrell feeding them grapes another time.
