Martin O’Neill reveals ‘wonderful’ Dutch player he would have had in his Seville side

Match Day Celtic Park

Martin O’Niell’s Seville team was a thing of beauty.

Larsson, Sutton, Lambert, Petrov, Valgaeren. All top class players and will all go down in Celtic’s history for their exploits both domestically and in Europe.

But Seville remains a source of pain for Martin O’Neill. The former Celtic boss was asked if he had the choice of any former Parkhead star to choose and put in his team of that era.

Speaking on The Record Celtic podcast, O’Neill said, “Well, Virgil van Dijk has gone on to prove himself.

Absolutely wonderful player. A really, really wonderful player. No question about that.

And if he’s one of the outstanding defenders in Europe, European football and has gone on to win the things he’s done, well I’m quite sure that we we will find a spot for him anyway in the side.

You know, might have been fifth sub but we would have found a spot for him! Only joking. No, absolutely terrific.”

Jeez, if big Virgil was in that side we would have won that tournament. No question. We would also have been a serious European force as well.

Although we would have needed a keeper upgrade.

Virgil partnering Bobo or Valgaeren would have gave even the top strikers at that time nightmares.
