“I didn’t have a great day at the office, mate.” Postecoglou’s brilliant response to Celtic star criticism

One thing you can always say about Ange Postecoglou is that the guy’s a class act in press conferences.

Calm, measured and articulate, this is one of the reasons why the Celtic fans have grown to love him over since he joined the club.

Another reason is his ability to handle the media.

At yesterdays pre match press conference, Postecoglou was fielding questions ahead of Celtic’s Premier Sports Cup match against Raith Rovers, when a journalist singled out Hoops new boy, James McCarthy for criticism after the 1-0 defeat to Livingston on Sunday.

Postecoglou refused to be drawn into any criticism and his response was brilliant, “Fair or unfair, James is a big boy and I’m sure he’s had plenty of criticism in his career and it was his first game.

“He will be the first to admit he didn’t have a great one but there were plenty of others alongside him who would also admit the same.

I didn’t have a great day at the office, mate.

“We have a responsibility as a whole group to go out there and represent our club and our supporters and those kind of opinions can change pretty quickly. I’m sure James is aware of that.”

And this is why the players want to play for Ange. At no point has he ever singled out one Celtic player over the course of poor results for criticism.

His responses remind me of that famous training ground video where the emphasis was working hard together, as a team.

He has taken that mantra into his press conferences and the players seem to respond to that well.

Here’s hoping that confidence in his players is repaid on the pitch tonight and Celtic progress to the semi final stages of the first available domestic trophy this season.
