“He’s reliable and solid” – Former Celtic star on Barkas Replacement

As Celtic continue to look reinforce their squad ahead of the new season, former Hoops striker, Charlie Nicholas, has said that one area that should be of concern is the goalkeeping position.

New boss, Ange Postecoglou, seems to be focusing on fixing the Parkhead clubs backline but Nicholas, speaking through his column, insists that’s not where the priority should be, “Celtic need a new No. 1 because Vasilis Barkas is not the answer.

“Also, if I were Celtic I wouldn’t be looking to spend a lot of money on another keeper. I think they could solve this position with a good loan and relatively cheaply.

“I would suggest Danny Ward, who did well for Wales at Euro 2020. He is not getting regular football at Leicester City and has shown internationally he is a reliable and solid keeper.

“Ward also proved himself at Aberdeen, when he came up on loan in a season where the Dons challenged Celtic up until he returned to his then-parent club Liverpool that January.

There is no doubt that the goalkeeping position last season was one that baffled many fans. With the club allowing Craig Gordon to leave on a free then spending the guts of £5m on Barkas, many fans are left feeling confused at how the move for the Greek international cam about, never mind hoe it got sanctioned.

Do the Celtic supporters still believe Barkas can do a job for the club? I think some do. Not many players become full internationals without having something about them. Barkas may come good next season under Ange, and with a settled back line, he could flourish.

So it seems Ange may well be focused on improving the right area of the team after all?
