Mark Wilson: There is one midfielder in Scotland better than McGregor

On their way to Paradise

This is a big call by former Celtic defender Mark Wilson.

Callum McGregor was the glue that held together a patchwork Celtic side last season that, up until January, was doing incredibly well to stay on the heels of Rangers.

When you look back at our squad then to what it is now, we had no right to win that league never mind still be in the hunt halfway through the season.

At the time Celtic drew 1-1 with Dundee United and the media were calling for Ange’s head, McGregor and the Celtic boss stood firm.

In that game McCarthy, Ajeti and Turnbull were starters but the bench tells you a different story. Soro, Montgomery, Welsh, Moffat, Soro and Scales were the managers options that day.

A far cry from where we are now.

McGregor was, by far, our best player last season. But this season, is that the case?

Not according to former Celtic star Mark Wilson.

Speaking on The Big Scottish Football podcast, Wilson said, “There’s only one midfielder better than McGregor in Scotland. [Reo] Hatate.

“Hatate at the minute is unplayable.

For me he was head and shoulders above the rest.

Now I’m not taking away from McGregor. McGregor is outstanding in how he controls the game.”

To be fair, you can’t really argue with that. Hatate is exceptional.

McGregor has been Mr Consistent which probably makes his contribution go under the radar but the fact we have two brilliant midfielders in the side fills me with great confidence for next season.
