Martin O’Neill reveals surprising ex-Celtic striker he is ‘eternally grateful’ to

Lisbon Lions Stand, Celtic Park

Martin O’Neill will forever be regarded as a Celtic legend.

The man that kicked off the Celtic revolution as we know it today, all the success we have had would not have been possible had it not been for O’Neill.

The Northern Irishman built Celtic from the ashes of John Barnes and since 2000, the club have never looked back.

Promoting his book in The Sun, O’Neill recalls the beginnings of his time at Celtic and thanks one former player for helping secure the capture of Chris Sutton:

“I could have done a complete book, almost on a daily basis, from my time at Celtic.

“It was hard to decide what to leave on the cutting room floor.

“For instance, I touch on a conversation I had Mark Viduka when I became Celtic manager and I’m almost sure that some pages must have fallen on the floor when I was sending them through!

“Viduka’s departure, by the way, actually turned out to be a landscape changer.

“I wanted to keep him. But he had issues with the club, which he didn’t even want to discuss from me from Melbourne. He was sold to Leeds and that enabled me to sign Chris Sutton for £6million.

“Him coming up, and his relationship on and off the field with Henrik Larsson, turned out to be huge.

“I can’t help think that had we not signed Sutton so early then our early matches against Rangers may have gone in a different direction. So for that I’m eternally grateful.

So are we Martin.

Could you imagine the club without Sutton?

We wouldn’t have the big Englishman in our corner fighting for us and Scottish football on almost a daily basis.

And man, how he winds up the Rangers fans is just epic.

Thank you, Viduka. From all the Celtic fans.
