Celtic ‘manipulated’ offside rule – Ibrox ref writer claims

Celtic Park

This was a bizarre interview. With all the furore from the south side of the city claiming that the offside rule needs changed after Kyogo’s masterclass on Sunday, former FIFA ref Keith Hackett [columnist for Ibrox News] gave this round up of Kyogo’s goal.

Speaking to Football Insider, Hackett said, “In law, he’s perfectly alright. What he’s done is, put himself onside by the very nature of getting behind the ball.

“The game should be praiseworthy of that player because he’s demonstrated a knowledge of the laws and benefitted by it.

“This was a tactic that was employed by Arsene Wenger often. He’d have Thierry Henry running at speed then getting recovery on the walk back. The ball would be played on the opposite side.

“This is how a club coach has manipulated the law accurately to allow this goal to be scored.

“It’s in the laws of the game, that is the correct application of the offside law. Well done to the assistant referee and match official for letting the goal stand.”

How can you manipulate a rule when you are abiding by it?

You are either offside or you are on. Simple. No dubiety no confusion.

Kyogo’s goal was onside as Hackett said. Just leave it at that. There is no need to claim manipulation or any other term that subliminally suggests that the Japanese striker cheated.

Or maybe that was just thrown in there to appease the supporters from Ibrox?
