Ally McCoists hilarious Van Djik comparison as Sevco star looks to jump ship

Celtic Park

Can someone help me out here?

How in God’s name can you compare the signing of Virgil van Djik to Joe Aribo?

Anyone?

You can’t. Two completely different players on a completely different level, there is simply no comparison.

But Ally McCoist did. And of he caveated it with, of course but McCoist knew what he was doing when he mentioned both players in the same breath.

Speaking on Talksport, McCoist said,  “It will be a sad loss but that is football.

“We bought him [Aribo] from Charlton a few years back and I think he has been fabulous.

“He has blossomed and he has grown. He has 20 odd caps for Nigeria, playing top class football.

“If he goes to Southampton they will be getting a very good player.

“I’m not for a minute saying they are going to get the same player they got when they signed Van Dijk from Celtic, but in general in terms of signings they don’t make too many mistakes.

Aribo is a decent player. No doubt.

But to try and promote his upcoming transfer as a Van Djik signing is just plain wrong.

But then, they are always trying to compare themselves to our great club so it is no great surprise.

  1. I’m in no way backing McCoist, but I didn’t hear or read anything to suggest that he was comparing them other than they both are leaving Glasgow for Southampton. He clearly states that in no way is he comparing the two. McCoist is a prick and was happy enough to take his £800k when in the 3rd division. What he says now is completely irrelevant, as is he.

  2. I agree entirely with Allaboutceltic. McCoist quite clearly did not suggest they were comparable, albeit that McCoist himself is irrelevant as a pundit. Don’t embellish what people say.
