“It’s tough on Rangers” – Barry Ferguson gets the Sevco title excuses ready

All we’ve heard for the past two seasons is how much strength in depth the *Rangers squad has.

From the Messiah that was Steven Gerrard right down to the kit man, their fans lauded the quality and how they have two players in every position as they waltzed to the title last season.

This season? They’ve lost one player in Nathan Patterson and Jermaine Defoe but as they constantly tell us they were affordable losses as they hardly featured.

Additions? Aaron Ramsey, Amad Diallo, Mateusz Zukowski, and Bobby S….I mean James Sands have been added to the ranks.

So in effect, strengthened by four additions. So why then is Barry Ferguson worried about the team burning out during the season?

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson bemoaned the Ibrox fixture list ,“Not from the first half of the season, where you get the break at Christmas.

“But after Christmas it does become a worry. I’ve been in the position myself, and it’s tough playing Thursday, Sunday, Thursday, Sunday at some stage.

“It is tough on Rangers. Will he (Gio van Bronckhorst) make a few changes tomorrow, then make a few changes at the weekend? I think that is something he will need to look at.

“For me the bread and butter is the league. That’s where the big pay cheque is at the end of the season.

“Europe is great, it can be great for the bank account, but I think Gio will look at the bigger picture and the league.”

Do Celtic not have the same problem? Have Celtic not had to negotiate Europe with a much smaller squad for the first half of the season? So what’s changed?

Celtic are top of the league, that’s what.

Barry seems to be getting the excuses in early should they fail to retain their title as they were so sure at the start of the season it was already in the bag.

The fear is real.
