Brendan Rodgers reveals reasons why he released Treble legend

Felip Benkovic was an enigmatic figure for Celtic.

When injury free, he was a very good defender for the Hoops. But that has always been an issue for the big Croat.

He had an opportunity to return to Celtic last summer and it did seems as though Rodgers was hinting towards a loan deal, but Benkovic chose to go to Belgium instead where he made a grand total of zero appearances.

As he returned to Leicester, no first team opportunities arose and he has since been let go by Rodgers.

A remarkable fall from grace for a guy that cost £12m.

Speaking to the media, Rodgers revealed the reasons behind letting the Treble winning go and join Udinese on a free, “For a number of reasons. He was a player who had been playing first-team football and then came to Celtic and he was outstanding.

He picked up some injuries, so his availability was disrupted.

The loans haven’t worked out well for him. Personally, it hasn’t worked for him. He had issues back home he felt he had to deal with.

He had to break the cycle. It wasn’t happening for him, so he needs a fresh start.

I hope he can get his career back on track. Hopefully he can go away and have some time to recover.

The Premier League is a difficult league to play. Unless you’re right physically and mentally, the Premier League is so difficult.”

Would he have been worth one last punt at Celtic Park? He probably couldn’t have handled Postecoglou’s training, never mind the pace of the game now compared to when he played for Rodgers.

We wish him well.
