As Scotland marched onto another victory against the Faroe Islands on Tuesday night, the goalkeeping debate regarding Craig Gordon raised it’s head once more.
Gordon was on fine form in the first half as he kept the Scots in the match with a fine goalkeeping display and Barry Ferguson was praising the former Celtic stopper for his performance when he made a surprising dig at former Hoops gaffer Brendan Rodgers for dropping him during his tenure at Celtic Park.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show, Ferguson said, “I’ve watched him plenty of times of season. He’s a presence in goals.
“He’s good with the ball at his feet. He’s a great shot stopper.
“He comes and dominates crossed balls.
“We spoke about it off air and I was surprised when Brendan Rodgers had said that was one of the things that he wasn’t quite good at.
“I always felt when I played with Craig Gordon at Scotland that was one thing he can handle, the ball at his feet.
“I was surprised that was one of the reasons why he got left out the Celtic team.”
Rodgers clearly made a mistake when he dropped Gordon for his then signing, Dorus de Vries as the Dutch keeper struggled under the microscope at Parkhead.
De Vries only managed fifteen appearances at Celtic Park before he was eventually replaced by the reinstated Gordon who went on to be a major player in Celtic’s Treble years.
