Sutton’s recalls hilarious Beckham pact with Lennon
The Chris Sutton interview from the Open Goal podcast is a thing of beauty.
Sutton himself is such an outspoken pundit and it is no surprise that the details of his football career are as hilarious as his many wind ups since he entered the punditry game.
There is one moment he shared from his days at Celtic that even I hadn’t heard about.
It was Ryan Giggs testimonial way back in 2001 at the Theatre of Dreams and Sutton recalls a pact he came up with, with former Celtic boss Neil Lennon, ” I remember watching from the stands and then when we went down to Old Trafford and beat them 4-3 [Ryan Giggs testimonial] and that was the Beckham slap.

“Me and Lenny says, ‘The first one to slap him’. And I got in there first. It was a nasty game. It was good. About 15,000 Celtic fans went down. And so we’ve gone down on the coach. Good looking guy was Beckham. But I was the first one to slap him.“
Sutton explained at the time why Celtic went down with a view to getting revenge on the Reds, “We were up for the game because of the way they played last time. We went out that night at Parkhead to play it as a friendly but they were putting the foot in all over the shop,” said Sutton.
“That annoyed us and we decided at Old Trafford we would be putting it about.
“A lot of guys were playing for pride and we got it back. To go there and win 4-3 shows we can handle ourselves.”
And handle themselves they did and you can watch the highlights below:
