“It Was Never A Concrete Option” – Former ‘Target’ Opens Up On Celtic “Interest”

The need for a goalkeeper at Celtic was never more evident this season than in any other season that I can remember.

Vasilis Barkas just wasn’t cutting it as Celtic’s number one and failed to repay the faith shown in him by Ange Postecoglou as mistakes made in the Champions League qualifier against Midtjylland proved.

The hunt for a ‘keeper took precedence and the speculation surrounding Aussie goalkeeper Mat Ryan, reached fever pitch as the Australian international looked to make his next move.

With the media pitching him for a move to Parkhead due to his connections with Postecoglou, Ryan has opened up and spoked about the link to Celtic and said a move was never an option, “It was never a concrete option, obviously there was a lot of speculation in the media about it,”

“The timing of it all, Ange had just arrived there and I think he was taking a look at his squad and all that.

“It never eventuated into anything so at that time Real came along, expressed an interest and we really liked the project that was being described to us.”

With Ryan eventually sealing a move to La Liga with Spanish side Real Sociedad, Celtic, who were never interested in the first place were filleted by the media for letting another ‘target slip away’.

With Joe Hart now the new goalkeeper in town, it would seem that all is well again between the Parkhead goalposts as his performance against Jablonec showed last night with two incredible saves in two minutes.

The Celtic goals, eventually, have a safe pair of hands.
