Geordie Media Report 65 Cap Winger Was Told to Join Celtic In January

Former Celtic target Christian Atsu has told how he was directed to join the Hoops in the January transfer by Newcastle United.

The experienced Ghanaian international winger was surplus to requirements at St James Park and revealed that five hours before the transfer window closed he was expected to make the move to Glasgow, “Five hours before the window closed, they asked me to go to another club,”

“Five hours to close!

“The club knew my position, why I’d stayed. With five hours’ notice, that was never going to change. It was impossible to make that decision. My family comes first.”

The report says that instead of making the journey up north, he decided to spend the rest of the season in Newcastle’s u23 squad.

Atsu is now a free agent and as he searches for a new club, he wouldn’t reveal Newcastle boss, Steve Bruce’s reasons for wanting him to make the move to Paradise.

Atsu started his career at Port and after Chelsea paid £3.5m for him back in 2013, his career never really go going as he failed to make a single appearance for the London club.

After loan spells at Vitesse, Everton, Bournemouth, Malaga and Newcastle, Atsu finally made his move to the Geordies permanent when he signed for them in 2017.

With 65 caps for Ghana, Atsu has a wealth of experience that could be utilised at Celtic Park and with the 29 year old out of contract, would it be possible for the Hoops to resurrect their interest in him?
